ercol History

ercol was established over 100 years ago in 1920 by Italian designer Lucian R Ercolani in High Wycombe, the centre of English furniture making. He was intent on designing and producing relevant and honest furniture, design and people were the cornerstones of his company from the very beginning. This remains true of the company today, it remains family owned with Lucian’s great grandson, Henry Tardos heading up the business to continue his beliefs today.

We’re one of the UK’s best-known designer-makers of fine wood furniture. Our production process is a perfect marriage of traditional craft skills and technology, in which we carefully harness the natural variations in wood to make every piece unique. With our timeless designs, fine materials and exemplary craftmanship, our products are built to last, and remain both beautiful and useful over many generations.

Our Designers

Design is central to ercol - design for comfort, design for function, design for looks. Our in-house designers are complemented by a team of draughtsmen who convert the designs into the detailed technical component drawings necessary to make the furniture, programmers for our CNC machines and the highly skilled craftsmen of our prototype team, who hand-craft the first samples of each design. Whilst we have an internal design team, we also commission both well-renowned and upcoming external designers to work with us on projects, bringing their flavours to the ercol style.

Quality can’t, won’t and shouldn’t be rushed. The timber we use in our furniture takes decades, even centuries, to grow and mature. No surprise, then, that it takes years to perfect the skills that make our products unique, and our craftspeople the best in the business. We’re proud to have so many long-serving people on our team, including those who’ve been with us their entire working lives. And we’re thrilled that, through our talented apprentices, we’re helping to keep those skills alive for generations to come.
